Abstract Single sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SSB-OFDM) is a technique of transmitting symbols by dividing each subcarrier into lower sideband (LSB) and upper sideband (USB). In particular, when used in a multiple access technology, frequency resources can be more finely allocated as compared with conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access, and the number of users to be simultaneously supported can be increased up to two times. In this paper, we study the basic SSB-OFDM system with these advantages and analyze the interference problem between LSB and USB in this system. And we propose a new SSB-OFDM system that can overcome this interference problem. Simulation results show that the proposed SSB-OFDM system using the interference cancellation technology in additive white Gaussian noise and Rayleigh fading environment effectively removes the interference between LSB and USB at the transmitter without additional signal processing burden on the receiver and so it is possible to effectively overcome the performance degradation due to the interference caused by the interference.
