Title Design of Lithium-ion battery Separator to Improve Low Temperature Characteristics

Abstract Lithium ion batteries generally have low life and low power at low temperatures. Due to the structure of the battery cell, various factors are influenced by the temperature. In this study, the characteristics of the separator controlling the short - circuit phenomenon occurring in the battery according to the low temperature are analyzed. Battery life and power characteristics of the battery were measured while varying the porosity, ventilation and thickness of the separator from -20°C to 20°C. The experimental results show that the lower the ventilation and the thinner the thickness, the stronger the property at low temperatures. The separator showed optimal performance when the ventilation is maintained at 150/ccs and the thickness is 14. Through this study, we derive the optimum separator type for battery design that is resistant to temperature characteristics.
