Abstract In this paper, we propose an electromagnetic wave based rectangular cavity resonator sensor for classification of different DI(Driveability Index) gasoline. Gasoline has an inherent dielectric constant which is dependent on various ingredients in gasoline. The proposed rectangular cavity resonator sensor for DI measurement is composed of a metal cavity including gasoline and a radiation monopole. The proposed DI classification sensor uses the fact that resonance frequency varies in accordance with variance of dielectric constant of gasoline. By collecting gasoline samples and measuring dielectric constants, we measured small dielectric constant difference of 0.022 on average. However we verify that the minimum resonant frequency difference of the proposed sensor is 15.5MHz by full wave analysis, which is enough for DI classification. By fabricating and measuring the proposed sensor, we verify that the proposed sensor having the minimum resonance frequency variation of 12MHz, can be used to classify the DI of gasoline.
