Abstract The CAN system has been successfully applied in many fields including automotive industry due to its high immunity to electrical interference and low cost. Recently, wireless communication systems are built in vehicles. Since various wireless attack on vehicles are expected, the CAN system should be prepared for wireless attacks. To complement the vulnerabilities of the CAN protocol, CAN data field should be encrypted and transmitted with authentication codes. Recently, a method of transmitting an authentication code by modifying CAN protocol was proposed. However, such change of the original CAN protocol can cause serious problems in CAN systems. In this paper, for the enhancement of CAN security, a data compression algorithm is used to reduce the data frame length so that there exists a space for MAC to be contained without any change of the original CAN protocol. Additionally, we propose a method to improve the authentication capability by including the length information of the compressed data inside the encrypted data and by changing the order of CAN data and MAC data using 3bits of the encryption key of the AES-128.
