Abstract A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used to acquire high-resolution images regardless of the weather. As the SAR is kind of active sensor, it transmits and receives the microwaves using antenna. It needs to be studied the timing of transmission and reception considering observation environment in the SAR geometry because antenna can not transmit and receive simultaneously. However, study of the SAR is biased towards image application because the system development cost is burden to student researcher. In this paper, we propose small and light weight design of the antenna and the RF systems for L-band GB-SAR. The antenna is designed with consideration for a experimental convenience and production cost. We have measured a 3-D radiation pattern, a horizontal and vertical pattern. A length and width of the antenna is 43cm and 43cm, respectively. The RF systems focus on L-band and spectrum quality. The RF requirements are an output power, a bandwidth, a VSWR, a harmonic, a sideband rejection, a gain, and etc. Finally, we have experimented several hundred meters at open field for verification of the developed system. The processing result was confirmed with satellite picture and we have found that two targets are captured from observation area.
