Abstract Controller Area Network (CAN) is the most commonly used communication protocol for In-Vehicle Network. CAN protocol has proper properties for In-Vehicle Network in terms of cost and reliability. As Electronic Control Units (ECUs) loaded on vehicles are increasing recently, new communication protocols are required to reduce the burden on the CAN bus. Compared to the CAN protocol, Controller Area Network with Flexible Data rate (CAN-FD) has higher transmission rate and payload. These advantages make response time of electronic devices shorter by reducing the loads of CAN bus. CAN-FD is also easy to maintain as CAN and CAN-FD are compatible with each other. In this paper, we propose CAN-FD Controller with 8 Mbit/s transmission rate. Our CAN-FD Controller is designed in accordance with ISO-11898 international standard and we verified the CAN-FD Controller by implementing on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Also we measured and verified whether the CAN frame is in accordance with the standard by using CAN hardware scope and software. We expect that the proposed high-speed CAN-FD Controller will contribute to advanced communication among multiple ECUs.
