Abstract In this work, a compact and low-cost microstrip filter is designed for receiver module of X-band radar. The balanced composite right/left-handed (CRLH) structure is utilized to obtain high quality factor and wideband filter. The CRLH components' formulas are derived individually for band-pass filter. At X-band, the microstrip CRLH filter are required to substitute conventional lumped CRLH one. To guarantee the condition of balance, the microstrip gap and shorted-stub are used. The parasitic elements of these components are handled by full-wave simulator of ANSYS High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The results are achieved with 3dB bandwidth of 1400MHz, the maximum insertion loss in range of 9GHz-10GHz only 0.94dB, the high rejections are 48dB at 7GHz and 35dB at 12GHz and the dimension of 6mm×5mm×0.87mm that is a good candidate for cavity filter in the receiver.
