Abstract LoRaWAN (long range wide area network) is one of the most widely used low power wide area (LPWA) network technologies in the unlicensed ISM bands. LoRaWAN adopts chirp spread spectrum (CSS) based physical layer specification which is Semtech's proprietary technology; so the details of the physical layer are not fully disclosed. Nevertheless, in this paper, we will investigate the performance of the LoRa physical layer, based on the recent research results on the LoRa. First, we will analyze the detection performance of CSS-based LoRa modulation in AWGN environments and verify it through computer simulation. In addition, we will compare the receiver performance of the LoRa physical layer according to system parameters by using computer simulation of the overall LoRa physical layer.
