Title Transparent Wideband Dipole Antennas Using Metal Mesh Film for UHD-TV Applications

Abstract Currently, external antennas for Ultra High Definition Television (UHD-TV) face problem with operating in the wide UHF band (470-771 MHz: 48%) and using external transmission line between tuner/antenna due to their relatively large size. In this paper, an external transparent planar dipole antenna is designed to a small-sized using a transparent electrode (TE) of metal mesh film (MMF). The MMF has an optical transparency of 68% and a low sheet resistance of 0.04 Ω/sq which allows us to improve the antenna’s visibility while its performance is still maintained. In addition, two identical antennas using Indium tin oxide(ITO) and Copper sheet(CS) are designed and measured for performance comparison with the proposed antenna. The transparent antenna with MMF shows an average efficiency of 72% and a peak gain of 2.4 dBi in the UHF band, which is similar with the copper sheet antenna. The result proved that the proposed antenna is a good candidate for the small planar external antenna of UHD-TV applications
