Abstract This paper presents a new method for a heart rate signal processing method with high accuracy and wide measuring range using an aortic arch which has a strong signal than that in the conventional radial artery. This study also validates that infrared is an optimal source for sensing the aortic arch which is located deeper than the radial artery. Furthermore the proposed heart rate measuring algorithm using bounds checking, maximum and minimum value of signals improves accuracy and deviation in measurement than those of the conventional algorithm, which leads to enlarging the measurement range.
