Abstract Underwater images have a significant degradation in image quality owing to the color cast by the attenuation of light wavelength, and the hazy effect by floating matters in the water. In order to solove this problem, a wide range of underwater image enchantment methods have been studied. In this paper, we propose an image stretching algorithm weighted by backscatter light to compensate the attenuated color channels that are commonly observed in underwater images. Next, we exploit an underwater image enhancement scheme by estimating the transmission map based on superpixel dark channel prior. In addition, the average of backscatter light of each color channel is presented to use as a weight for calculating the transmission map. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods subjectively and objectively.
