Abstract Transmit beamforming with phased array antennas has been attracting attention as an effective means to improving the efficiency of RF wireless power transfer. In order to realize optimal beamforming, the energy transmitter needs to acquire the position information of the receiver or the channel state information between the transmitter and receiver, and predetermined pilot signals are usually used to extract such information. In this paper, we propose a wireless power transfer system based on beam-steered pilot signals. In the proposed system, the receiver estimates its own direction relative to the transmitter and feeds the estimated information back to the transmitter, and then, the transmitter emits beamformed energy signals to the corresponding direction. We verify the performance of direction estimation with respect to the resolution of beam-steered pilot signals and analyze the efficiency of wireless power transfer.
