Abstract To diagnose the deterioration of the Metal-Oxide Surge Arrestor(MOSA) for protecting the intelligent communication facility and the human is a very important factor to prevent secondary accidents. A deterioration of MOSA has been used to measure the leakage current and calculate the resistive leakage current to analyze the degree of degradation. Reprehensive examples include the Harmonic Analysis Method(HAM) and Point-On-Wave Method(POWM), but the reliability of deterioration diagnosis has not been secured due to fundamental errors. In this paper, a method to improve the reliability of HAM technique is proposed. The error of HAM was compensated by using the electrical characteristics in which the resistive leakage current and the capacitive leakage current are orthogonal to each other. The proposed method simulated the current error according to the voltage ratio of the fundamental harmonic and the third harmonic, and confirmed the reliability by simulating the current error according to the value of the varistor parameter .
