Abstract In order to build a wireless communication network with various communication stations, it is necessary to aim the beam at the partner station with high accuracy and high speed. In addition, in order to fundamentally suppress the influence of wireless communication systems that use adjacent frequencies, it is necessary to form a pattern null in the direction of the interference source. Active phased array antennas can not only electrically steer the beam by controlling the weighting of the excitation signal, but can also form a pattern into a specific shape. To use such a pattern synthesis method, it is necessary to calculate the weighting of the excited signals that form the required pattern. In this paper, we have presented a method for approximately calculating the weighting of the excitation signals in order to form the required pattern based on the least squares method. The method presented was verified through various simulations. We also confirmed that the weights of the excitation signals for synthesizing special patterns such as the radiation pattern standard for satellite communications can be easily calculated by the presented method.
