Abstract In this paper, we proposed a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system based on a spatial scanning by a digital micromirror device (DMD), which can replace the conventional slit system in line-scan strategy without mechanical motion. The line-scan rate and spatial modulation width were controlled by changing the micromirror pattern in the DMD, and during scanning both HSI data and real images were acquired simultaneously. As a result, the RMSE between the center wavelength measured through the wavelength calibration and the actual center wavelength of the bandpass filter was 3.82. Also through the color checker experiment, the feasibility of classifying various color patterns was shown by comparing the spectra obtained from the system. It is expected that the HSI system developed can be applied to various fields such as foreign object detection in food safety, affected area segmentation in biomedical research and hazardous substance warning in facility management.
