Abstract Recently, as the economic, political, and environmental importance of the polar region is emerging worldwide, the necessity for polar science increased. Glaciers and permafrost observation, tracking movement routes, and environment monitoring can be done remotely by using a polar wireless sensor network, which has been developed for the past few decades. This network has become an essential base technology for conducting polar scientific research in various fields. Yet, due to environmental factors such as cryogenic temperatures, blizzards, and crevasses, it is difficult to provide the reliability of wireless communication networks in the polar regions, and the number of various resources such as manpower, time, and materials is much higher compared to other climate zones. As a possible solution, in this paper, we suggest Fault-Tolerant Network(FTN) by using a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) as a Data Mule when the communication network's connectivity and stability can not be guaranteed due to extreme polar environment. In addition, the feasibility of the proposed network and system is verified through unit function experiments.
