Abstract This paper proposes an application method of phase comparison monopulse technique for estimating target angle in radar altimeter. Unlike monopulse radar, which obtains 3D spatial information of the point target, radar altimeter measures only the distance of the target distributed on the ground, thus measurement error occurs when the target angle is not zero. In order to minimize error, the application of phase comparison monopulse technique in radar altimeter is studied to acquire 3D information of the terrain. High-resolution waveform designed to avoid overlapping of the phase information, acquisition of zero Doppler information and the multi baseline based angle estimation are proposed for acquisition methods. Validity of the proposed method is verified by analyzing test data.
