Abstract This paper suggested and tested the method to detect an arc fault in the DC power system. Most of detection method of arc fault is mainly used to analyze it with using PSD(Power Spectrum Density) by FFT(Fast Fourier Transform). But the reliability of this method is low. To enhance the reliability of detecting arc faults it is selected both the frequency bandwidth and the proper mean of PSD related with the arc fault. The proper frequency bandwidth is from 10 kHz to 100 kHz and obtains a mean of PSD to exclude the pink noise using the interpolation, Finally, the FDM(Frequency Division Method) was proposed, which is a method to obtain means of PSD in each frequency section. The experimental setup for verifying the detection reliability of FDM is installed. In results, a detection probability of FDM is about 40% higher than the existing method using the PSD. It is expected that an arc detection method with FDM is utilized in the DC power system including an solar photovoltaic station.
