Abstract The most gate driver circuits adopted in flat panel displays use carry-type shift register structure. The gate driver circuits with the shift register structure use the driving method that sequentially controls the gate output signal. In the case of a display subjected to physical stress, such as a flexible display, some units of the gate driver may not operate due to the characteristics of the shift register circuit structure. Due to such a problem, a malfunction may occur while driving the display. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes the gate driver with a carry-free decoder structure that generates a gate output signal by controlling each gate driver unit. When the proposed gate driver circuit is applied, the display quality can be improved due to the reduced driving error in flexible displays. To verify the driving characteristics of the proposed gate driver circuit, simulations have been performed using a circuit simulator. Then, after devising circuit layout, the driving characteristics of the proposed circuit structure have been verified by manufacturing actual thin film transistors using a low-temperature polysilicon substrate through the manufacturing process. If the gate driver with the decoder structure proposed in this paper is integrated and used in either flat panel or flexible displays, the quality of displays will improve.
