Abstract Both the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) are attracting growing attention as key technologies for next-generation wireless networks. In order to overcome the limitations and problems of UAV communication and to improve the system performance, research on IRS-assisted UAV communications that integrate the IRS into UAV communications is being actively conducted. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on communication technologies for UAVs mounted with IRSs. We first present representative scenarios that the integrate the IRSs and UAVs according to the role of the UAVs. Then, we classify the latest related works on the UAV-mounted IRS communication systems according to the main performance criterion, such as spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, and secrecy rate, and discuss the featured technical approaches of the works. Finally, we highlight technical issues to be solved for practical implementation of communication systems for UAVs mounted with IRS.
