Abstract With the development of technology, the utilization of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is gradually expanding, and they are being applied in many fields, including IoT, for convenience such as cost and maintenance. However, faults in nodes or links can occur at any time due to external factors or internal faults in the networks, causing various problems. Therefore, fault detection of links or nodes within a wireless sensor network is an essential requirement for improving the reliability of the wireless sensor network and efficient network management. Therefore, this paper describes the need for faults diagnosis of WSN and faults detection techniques of WSN, declares a new TTL field portion in the field of IEEE 802.11 MAC header, and proposes an algorithm to detect faults based on TTL in wireless sensor networks. In addition, it is shown that an algorithm based on TTL may detect an faults through Matlab simulation.
