Abstract This paper proposes an optical receiver design method for IFF(Identification Friend or Foe) with 500nw sensitivity including PIN-PD, and presents a series of processes to verify performance by implementing and measuring. The receiver is composed of a detector, amplifiers, comparator, pulse width controller, MCU(Micro-Controller Unit) and receives question data with pulse train from the optical transmitter. It determines whether the data is correct or not, and then it delivers the results to the controll unit. The pulse train is consists of more than 70 pulse signals with a period of about 1ms and a pulse width of about 10ns. The receiver detects and amplifies the interrogation data, processes it into digital data, and transmits it to the control unit. The received signal is determined as normally received when the signal is above the threshold voltage by the comparator regardless of the signal amplitude. Because there is no need for a switching circuit for gain control in the amplifier, the stability problem of the circuit is reduced. In addition, since it is only necessary to determine whether a signal is received or not, only one comparator is used instead of an ADC that consumes a lot of power, which has advantages in terms of power consumption and substrate size. As a result of the measurement, the receiver proposed in this paper has sensitivity of 500nw, BER 0.15, and it has proven that it has a sensitivity of 500nw, BER 0.15.
