Abstract Long range (LoRa) is one of the low power wide area (LPWA) techniques for Internet of things (IoT) communication, and it has recently been studied as a candidate for physical layer of low earth orbit (LEO) satellite IoT communications. In this paper, we propose a Doppler rate estimation scheme based on the 2-nd order difference (SOD) for LoRa signal detection in LEO satellite IoT communications. We will first define design parameters used in the proposed scheme and provide a practical guideline to determine those values. Through computer simulations, we will compare and analyze Doppler rate estimation performances according to design parameters.
