Abstract In this paper, a method for determining whether passengers get on or off using only beacons and smartphones was proposed to build a BLE-based contactless faring system for trams. In the case of the existing faring system for buses or trams using BLE, a virtual gate was created by adjusting the RSSI value of BLE, and passengers passing through it were determined. In the case of this virtual gate method, the number of beacons installed inside the vehicle is large, so the amount of data to be processed is large, and the error range changes depending on the sensor state or the surrounding environment, so there is a problem that the accuracy of the distinction between the inside and outside of the tram is lowered. To solve these problems, a location-based get on or out decision logic rather than gate-based was proposed. Only one beacon was installed each inside the tram and at the station, a smartphone was used to scan the beacon, and an Android-based App was developed. The transmission strength of the beacon was adjusted to scan only the relevant area could be scanned, and the major value of the station beacon scanned while driving was stored and used to return the route when getting out. And in order to increase the accuracy of getting on and off, the returned route was compared with the tram running route to make a judgment. The evaluation of the developed system was carried out on the actual tram vehicle of the test line located in Osong-eup, Chungcheongbuk-do, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm was proved by changing the passengers moving route in various ways.
