Abstract In this paper, we propose a new full-body motion tracking system using outside-in HMD trackers and RGB-cameras for experiencing the virtual reality-based metaverse contents with three-dimensional avatars. The proposed system is composed of an outside-in HMD tracker for tracking the head and hand motion of a user, and a RGB-D camera for tracking the upper and lower body motion of the user. The propose system can track the head, hand, upper-body and lower-body motion of the user by automatically calibrating the outside-in HMD tracker and the RGB-D camera with a 2-step auto-calibration algorithm instead of using any calibration tools. The performance of the proposed full-body motion tracking system is demonstrated with real experiments.
