Abstract To increase the capacity of wireless communication networks and efficiently utilize the frequency band through spatial multiplexing multi-input multi-output (MIMO) techniques, it is required to effectively remove interference caused by signals coming from different antennas at the receiver end. Especially as massive or large-scale number of antennas are employed, the computational complexity at the receiver exponentially increases to remove interference. Additionally, when applying channel codes with bit-level associations, the computational complexity further increases due to the adoption of bit-level detection rather than symbol-level detection. Therefore, to practically implement large-scale, soft-decision MIMO detection systems, reducing computational complexity should take precedence over enhancing detection performance at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a dimension reduction soft demodulation based on minimum-mean-square-error parallel interference cancellation (MMSE-PIC) for iterative detection. This technique significantly reduces computational complexity while delivering superior performance compared to existing detection techniques for large-scale spatial multiplexing MIMO systems.
