Abstract Recently, there are increasing demands on the development of light-weight electric surface boats due to the regulation of preventing pollutions. This paper presents an electric motor propulsion boat system with a light-weight material which could provide the cost competitiveness and safety to the light weight of the hull. First, using specific propeller characteristic equations which can satisfy the basic performance of the proposed boat regarding the operation time and speed, the initial sizing and the shape of the boat is developed. In addition, for the electric propulsion system, a relatively lightweight lithium polymer battery is designed and integrated into the boat, and 3D models of the boat are designed to analyze the stability of the electric boat with the analysis the bottom pressure of the hull structure. A dual GPS based navigation system is proposed to provide the position, velocity, and heading information. The performance of the proposed boat's lithium polymer battery is validated by testing the charge/discharge SOC (State of Charge) and conducting ground and sea trials.
