Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) is currently in increasing demand for its applications and technologies worldwide. IoT technology is implementing new functions by utilizing the development of computing performance, electronic product miniaturization, and network interconnection, and creating various market opportunities and business models. This study performed text mining techniques and semantic network analysis using online news data related to the IoT. As a result of the analysis, the most used words were 'business', 'smart', and 'company', and these words also had high values of network centrality. As a result of CONCOR analysis, six clusters were formed, cluster 1 was 'application of various fields of IoT', cluster 2 was 'contributing to Korea's future and economic development', cluster 3 was 'promoting digital innovation and supporting business', cluster 4 was 'environmental protection by increasing the efficiency of facility installation, management, and operation', cluster 5 was 'promoting smart city construction in local communities', and cluster 6 was 'innovating products and services of leading companies'. The research results show that IoT technology plays an important role in various industrial fields.
