Abstract This paper considers a video broadcasting scenario in which heterogeneous users with different display resolutions, different operating bit rates, and different numbers of receive antennas are present within the service area of a base station. We propose an efficient multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) video broadcasting technique that well serves different types of users residing inside the service area. Our proposed scheme adopts spatially scalable video coding, and makes use of both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing techniques. We compare the performance of our proposed scheme with that of the one adopted by the digital video broadcasting (DVB) standard, which utilizes hierarchical modulation to provide unequal error protection (UEP) for transmission of scalable video bit stream over wireless channels. We also compare the performance of the proposed scheme with that of a non-scalable video transmission scheme. Numerical evaluation shows that our proposed video broadcasting scheme significantly outperforms both the DVB and the non-scalable video broadcasting strategies. The performance improvement is observed for both different types of users we consider.
