Abstract A gate driver with a high-precision dead time controller for gallium nitride (GaN) DC-DC buck converters is presented in this paper. The proposed gate driver employs a digital dead time controller that consists of a counter, comparator, and a delay line circuit. This controller predicts and generates the optimal dead time for zero voltage switching (ZVS) in reponse to variations in the input voltage and output load conditions. Through adaptive dead time adjustment, reverse conduction loss and switching loss during buck converter dead time operations are effectively reduced. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a tunable dead-time range of 7.8?46.7ns and reduces the power loss by up to 643.35 mW over input voltage and load current ranges of 24-52 V and 0.5?10 A.
