Modern vehicles operate based on various Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and in-vehicle networks, and increasing connections with external networks expose vehicles to cyber attacks and software malfunctions. However, in actual accident investigations, only limited in-vehicle data are often available due to storage limitations and legal restrictions. This study proposes a vehicle digital forensic technique that reconstructs vehicle driving states and analyzes driver-specific driving characteristics using limited in-vehicle data. The proposed method reconstructs vehicle speed and driving distance based on acceleration and brake pedal inputs and extracts acceleration and braking features using a driver-specific threshold-based event detection method. In addition, driver identification was performed using window-based feature extraction and cosine distance comparison. Experimental results showed high correlations between reconstructed speed and actual vehicle speed for some drivers, and acceleration and braking event patterns also showed different tendencies depending on the driver. The results also confirmed that limited in-vehicle data can be used to distinguish driving characteristics of some drivers. This study is meaningful in that it proposes a vehicle digital forensic framework capable of reconstructing vehicle driving states and cross-validating data integrity using limited in-vehicle data. |
