Abstract Monitoring energy usage patterns of the city has been one of the most popular research topics in recent years. Thanks to advances in sensor network technologies and wide-area geo-spatial information systems, innovative monitoring tools, combining those areas, have drawn attentions of the research community. We are developing an energy monitoring and visualization system as a research effort for the U-ECO City R&D Project. A prototype energy monitoring system called EnerGIS solution is presented in this context. It is a web-based rich-internet application integrating 3D Geospatial Viewer based on Google Earth platform with data visualization components. Dynamically combining City Information Model data from the database, power sensor data though sensor network, and environmental GIS data, it build up its own monitoring database. The EnerGIS solution, powered by its middleware engine, generates required digital information to construct the content of the visualization system in runtime. In order to secure the performance when dealing with large data sets of urban area, we analyzed spatial hierarchies of urban buildings with intelligent Level of Details, and interaction scenarios. Then, we developed a data structure to implement the database, and finally we are at the stage of assembling all the components into an integrated visualization system.
