Abstract An increasing number of applications on CAAD and GIS particularly require complex semantic information. In the context of spatial data infrastructures the needed data are drawn from distributed sources and often are thematically and spatially fragmented. Straight forward joining of objects between CAAD and GIS would inevitably lead to information inconsistencies such as cracks, permeations, or other inconsistencies. Semantic information can help to reduce the ambiguities for geometric integration, if it is coherently structured with respect to geometry. To facilitate the interoperability between CAAD and GIS environment, this paper proposes a basic approach for geometric information of CAAD objects expressed by the IFC model and GIS objects expressed by the GML model. The discussions include not only fundamental investigation for the proposed interoperable data model but also basic research for the primitive transformation methodology of ontology. This research will help in the future development of automatic integration methods for complex CAAD-GIS applications.
