Abstract The present study examined the reliability of code equations for the bond strength of GFRP reinforcing bars with spiral ribs and proposed a generalized model for bond stress-slip relationship of such bars based on test results. The test parameters investigated for the bond stress-slip relationship of GFRP bars were the design compressive strength (20 MPa, 40 MPa, and 60 MPa) of concrete and nominal bar diameter (6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm). The ACI 440 equations considerably overestimate the bond strength of GFRP bars, whereas the JSCE equations underestimate the bond strength. The CSA equations give better predictions than the above code equations, but tend to overestimate test resutls when the concrete compressive strength is 53 MPa. The proposed models for the bond stress-slip relationship are in good agreement with test results exhibiting a non-linear parabolic shape.
