Abstract In order to use fly ash as an admixture for concrete, it is necessary to add an alkali activator and it is necessary to remove unburned carbon. Thus far, surface treatment using plasma has been carried out, but plasma has a problem of generating ozone when oxygen is used as an active gas. Ozone not only oxidizes the surrounding material but also harms the health of the experimenter. Therefore, in this study, we have studied the removal of unburned carbon by using arc discharge. An SEM analysis was carried out to confirm the removal effect of unburned carbon. Physical properties were confirmed by measuring the ignition loss, specific gravity and fineness. In addition, compressive strength and flexural strength at three days of age were measured to confirm the hydration reactivity change. Experimental results showed that the unburned carbon was removed, the ignition loss and specific gravity were decreased, and the fineness was increased. Also, the compressive strength was increased with surface treatment fly ash using arc discharge. Therefore, it is considered that arc discharge can be employed to treat the surface of the fly ash.
