Abstract This study examines the mobilization approach of bacteria for a preferable environment for growth and survival of isolated bacteria in biological coating materials to protect the substrate of concrete exposed to chemical and microbiological attacks. For biomimic action and to protect the membrane against exo-attack, a glycocalyx substance generated around bacteria cells was introduced to coating materials. The glycocalyx productivity of Rhodobacter blasticus was greater than that of other tested species in all carbon source media, showing the highest glycocalyx content of 4.45 g/g in a malic acid medium. With regard to the population and colony formation of immobilized bacteria, the expanded vermiculite was superior to perlite and powder-type super absorbent polymer. The present fundamental tests established isolation and cultivation of photosynthetic bacteria strain generating glycocalyx a mobilization technique for bacteria using expanded vermiculite.
