Abstract In this study the durability of high alumina cement (HAC) with different composition of clinkers, in terms of resistance of chloride transport, was evaluated. The composition of clinkers in HAC were determined by quantitative X-ray analysis (Q-XRD) using Rietveld method. For a development of the strength, the penetration resistance of fresh mortar was immediately measured after mixing at a given time interval and the compressive strength of mortars cured in a wet chamber at 25±2 °C was measured at 1-91 days. To assess the risk of corrosion of steel in specimen, the diffusion cell test was performed and simultaneously a further experimentation including an examination of the pore structure, chloride binding was carried out. As a results, it was found that an increase in CA clinker content resulted in an increase in the setting time, which affected the development of the strength; maximum strength for Union 50 was much higher, and then continuously reduced until 91 days due to conversion. For the rate of chloride transport, however, the lower effective coefficient of diffusion was obtained in Union 50, arising from poor pore connectivity in the cement matrix after conversion process.
