Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural performance of a box-type connector developed for connecting vertical reinforcing bars of precast concrete walls and to investigate the structural behavior of precast concrete wall with it under lateral forces. The compressive and tensile test were performed to evaluate the stress transfer performance of the joint connected to the vertical reinforcing bars. After that, cyclic horizontal loading tests were performed on the PC wall assemblages with horizontal joints where the vertical reinforcing bars connected with the box. In the design of wall specimens, two design conditions were considered: 1) the design for the stress acting on the wall in the building; and 2) the design for the precast concrete intermediate shear walls of ACI 318-14 21.4; the horizontal joint is designed to exhibit 1.5 times higher than the yield strength of the joint. The axial force was not considered during the horizontal loading experiments of wall specimens. From the compressive and tensile tests, it was found that the box-type connector secured the required performance of the connector for design purpose. Experimental results on the cyclic horizontal test of wall specimens show that both walls have a strength exceeding the nominal strength. Especially, the wall which designed the connection part 1.5 times stronger than the design strength showed very stable hysteretic behavior up to 2.5 % drift. On the other hand, the wall designed to meet the design strength of the joints reached maximum strength at 1.43 % drift which is low ductility. The reason for the low deformation capacity is the effect of pullout failure due to the failure of ensuring a sufficient pendant distance after tightening the nuts when assembling the lower steel bars connected to the box by the bolt fastening method. Therefore, it is considered that strict quality control is necessary so that such problems do not occur during construction.
