Abstract The objective of the present study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of bottom ash aggregate concrete through the comparison with those predicted using Lee et al.’s model for conventional lightweight aggregate concrete and design equations of ACI 318-14 and/or fib 2010 provisions. The test parameters investigated in 10 concrete mixtures were water-to-cement ratio and natural sand content for replacement of bottom ash fine aggregates. The oven-dry unit volume weight of bottom ash aggregate concrete varied from 1,510 kg/m3 to 1,698 kg/m3, which satisfied the requirements for class II of structural lightweight aggregate concrete specified in concrete specification. The compressive strength gain ratio, modulus of elasticity and fracture, splitting tensile strength, and bond strength against reinforcing bars of bottom ash aggregate concrete tended to be lower than those of artificial lightweight aggregate concrete at the same compressive strength and unit volume weight. Meanwhile, the moduli of elasticity and fracture of bottom ash aggregate concrete could be conservatively estimated using the design equations of ACI 318-14.
