Abstract In this study, the mechanical and hydraulic properties of Hwangtoh bricks were experimentally investigated using material analysis techniques of mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Eighteen Hwangtoh bricks were purchased from eight different manufacturers in Korea. The compressive strength of the bricks ranged between 1.6 MPa and 5.9 MPa, and it was highly affected by the total porosity. One of the most important findings was obtained from the strength test of the bricks which had been used for absorbency test. Sixty-one percent of the total bricks showed severe strength degradation due to water absorption; in particular, about the half of them completely lost their mechanical performance. On the other hand, eleven percent of the total bricks showed a significant strength improvement after water absorption. Based on the material analysis results, the different hydraulic properties of the bricks could be explained. For water resistant bricks, the traces of carbonation reaction by lime and hydration reaction by Portland cement were found. For the other cases, almost no calcium and sulfur components were detected. These findings can be used to point out potential safety issues of the bricks manufactured by simply compacting clay or soil, and also to develop the performance or quality standards of Hwangtoh-based construction materials.
