Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the failure and mechanical behavior of the columns reinforced with NSM (Near Surfaced Mounted), EBR (Externally Bonded Reinforcing) CFRP strips and CFRP sheet. To accomplish this objective, a total of 18 reinforced concrete columns were made and uniaxial compression tests were performed. From this study, it is found that the axial ultimate strength of the columns reinforced with NSM strips were significantly improved compared to the unstrengthened columns and columns strengthened with EBR CFRP strips. The maximum increase of axial ultimate strength was 128 percent compared to the control column. Columns with EBR CFRP strips and CFRP sheet showed to have a larger linear section than the general reinforced concrete column members, and the ultimate strength showed great enhancement as well. It is shown that the columns reinforced with NSM strips were able to sufficiently control cracks in the vertical direction, but EBR strips could not resist the propagation of vertical cracks, finally strips were debonded from the swollen concrete surface.
