Abstract |
In this research, to improve the seismic performance of a low-rise RC building, the an externally retrofitting method to improve the seismic performance of a low-rise RC building was suggested. The efficacy of the presented method was empirically verified by conducting cyclic loading tests of practical frames extracted from a non-seismically designed RC building. As a result, in the it was found that in non-reinforced specimens, brittle shear failure occurred with a sharp drop in strength as the damage concentrated on the upper and lower parts of its the columns. However, the specimen retrofitted by using a Kagome damper showed an elliptical hysteresis, which has high-energy-absorbing capacity, with increase in strength and stiffness. Moreover, the damper improved energy dissipation by about 3.78 times due to the increases in strength and deformation capacity. By applying the suggested externally retrofitting method, it is expected that drift angle will be able to meet the standard of KBC 2016 to secure safety and improve strength of a low-rise RC buildings without seismic detailing.
