Abstract This research is aimed to develop a precast concrete (PC) structural wall that can be used as a special shear wall. A PC double wall with welded close hoops was proposed to overcome high level of difficulties in the construction of cast-in-place (CIP) special shear walls. An experimental program was planned with four special double wall specimens (DW) and one special CIP wall specimen (RW). Test variables are wall thicknesses (200 & 250 mm) and distribution methods of horizontal joint reinforcing rebars (distributed & concentrated). Through cyclic load tests, the behavior of DWs was compared with that of RW in terms of strength and ductility as well as crack distribution patterns. Seismic resistance capacity of DW was evaluated based on the FEMA 450 acceptance criteria which includes maximum strength ratio to nominal strength, reserved strength ratio at the limit drift, stiffness at zero drift ratio, relative energy dissipation ratio. Nonlinear modeling parameters and performance levels were also evaluated based on ASCE/SEI 41 and ACI 374. Since the proposed PC DW showed good structural performance, it was concluded that it can be a good solution for special PC shear wall system.
