Abstract The present study examined the structural efficiency of steel-bar truss systems, which are made up of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal elements and anchorage sets representing joint nodes, developed for seismic strengthening of un-reinforced masonry walls. Three wall specimens, un-reinforced masonry (URM), masonry strengthened with truss systems (MTS), and masonry strengthened with truss systems including spring damper (MTS_S), were tested under constant axial and cyclic lateral loads. From the test results, the improvement ratio in the stiffness of the strengthened masonry walls due to the truss effect could be estimated to be 1.2. When compared with the strength and energy dissipation capacity measured in URM, their increasing ratios were 2.16 and 6.0, respectively, for MTS, and 2.29 and 13.5, respectively, for MTS_S. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed technique has a good applicability in enhancing the stiffness, strength, and ductility of URM.
