Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the seismic performance of columns entirely restored with new reinforcing bars and concrete. These columns were formerly severely damaged non-seismic columns. The restored columns were designed to have the same geometrical dimension and arrangement of longitudinal reinforcement as the original non-seismic columns. All column specimens were tested under a constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads. Test results showed that the flexural strength of the restored columns was equivalent to that of the non-seismic columns and predictions calculated using the rectangular stress block specified in ACI 318-19. The restored columns exhibited higher displacement ductility ratios than the non-seismic columns, the former being as much as 1.35 times and 1.66 times for the axial load level of 0.25 and 0.5, respectively; and the corresponding values for the improved rates of the equivalent damping ratios calculated up to 80 % peak load at the post-peak branch were 1.18 and 1.47, respectively.
