Abstract This study examined the production potentials of permeable blocks which are capable of physically removing atmospheric sulfur oxide (SOX) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) using the porous materials including zeolite powder, zeolite bead, and coconut shell activated carbon. The main parameters considered to produce the permeable blocks included the porous material content ()-to-total aggregate by volume and the type of porous materials. In consideration of outdoor exposure conditions, the removal rates of SOX and NOX of the prepared permeable blocks were measured after 10 times washing and freezing-and-thawing. Test results showed that permeable blocks produced using the prepared porous materials exhibited at least 74.5 % SOX removal rates and maintained values of at least 70.7 % after 10 times washing and freezing-and-thawing. The NOX removal capacity of the permeable blocks increased with the increase in , indicating that the removal rate was 15.4 % for =10 % and 43.4 % for =40 %. From the present test results, an value of 10 % can be recommended for the investigated porous materials considering the SOX and NOX removal capacities and the minimum requirements specified in KS F 4419 for permeable blocks.
