Abstract This study examined the practical feasibility of bacteria-based self-healing pellets to repair cracks of mortars. To induce calcium carbonate formation by bacteria activity at the crack planes, Sphingobacterium multivorum was isolated and immobilized in porous expanded vermiculites with mediums to ensure breeding and growing of bacteria within the hardened cement matrix. The expanded vermiculites immobilizing bacteria was then mixed with pozzolanic materials and accelerating agents, thereby producing pellets with the maximum size of 0.85~1.12 mm. The bacteria-based self-healing pellets were classified into three types such as the original form of BP considering bacteria only, FBP adding nylon fibers to BP to induce the bridging action in the healing materials, and EBP with capsule technology to protect the pellets during mortar mixing process. The crack healing efficiency of the proposed pellets was assessed from constant hydrostatic permeability testing and chemical composition analysis of healing materials formulated along the crack planes. Considering the compressive strength development and crack healing rates of mortar, FBP exhibited a promising applicability as a crack self-healing pellets.
