Abstract |
A standalone precast concrete column system was proposed to fulfill construction and structural performance without the need for braces. Headed bars with jammed heads were used to develop resistance to construction loads in an incomplete stage prior to grouting and hardening. Experimental tests were conducted to validate the intended construction and structural performance. These tests included: 1) monotonic tensile tests of mechanical splice assemblies, 2) monotonic lateral load tests of column-footing specimens during the construction stage, and 3) two-story building mock-up and impact hammer tests. The results of the tests demonstrated that, the developed system satisfied the requirements of KDS 14 20 52, and it effectively minimized the error associated with misalignment. Maximum moments measured from the monotonic lateral tests exceeded the nominal moment capacities calculated based on actual material properties, with all plasticity concentrated in the mechanical splices. Furthermore, the proposed system offers adequate serviceability for wind loads during construction according to KDS 21 50 00.
