Abstract |
This study examined the carbonation and freeze-thawing resistances of biomimetic mortars incorporating Bacillus licheniformis and Halomonas venusta as halophilic strains. These bacteria were immobilized in expanded vermiculite under a negative pressure environment. Fine aggregates were then replaced by expanded vermiculites at volumes of 10 % and 30 %. Test results showed that the depth of carbonation in biomimetic mortars with 10 % and 30 % expanded vermiculite was 15~30 % and 30~38 % lower than that of the control mortar, respectively. These biomimetic mortars also exhibited durability indices 1.3~1.5 and 1.1~1.6 times higher, respectively, when compared with the control mortar, in freeze-thaw tests conducted for up to 300 cycles. Even after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, viable cell populations in biomimetic mortars remained at over 1×104 cell/mL.
