Abstract |
A bacterium capable of uitilizing 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) as a sole source of carbon and energy was isolated from soil samples of farm lands by using a chemostatic culture method. Taxonomic characterization demonstrated the isolate the be a species of Pseudomonas. An actively growing culture of the strain, designated CS-90 was able to degrade more than 98% of 2, 4-D at 500 ㎎/ℓwithing 3 days and more than 94% of 2, 4-D at 2,000 ㎎/ℓwithin 6 days. The strain was also found to be able to utilize other aromatic compounds such as benzoate, salicylate as its sole source of carbon, and oxidize chlorinated organic compounds, especially chlorinated phenolic compounds. Resting cells of CS-90 could dechlorinate 2, 4-D and release 97% of chloride ion at 500 ㎎/ℓof substrate in phosphate buffer by incubating at 30℃ for 24 hours. |
